Every two weeks, Art & Artists will recommend the best contemporary art content.
What’s “the best” contemporary art content, according to me? I’d say it’s nuanced, substantive, historically-informed writing that considers a diversity of artists and perspectives. It’s articles and essays that are not rushed and/or copied from other sources and could hold up in a few years. It’s content that might take longer than ten minutes to consume. It’s videos and podcasts that are well produced and capitalize on the strengths of their mediums. It’s academic essays that chart new territories. It’s even some deep and insightful market reporting.
Recommendations will come from the for- and non-profit sectors. They will come from art news websites but also academic journals. They’ll be museum resources but also podcasts. And they will usually be recent but they could originate from many years ago. Each recommendation will also include an explanation of why I’m sharing it and—as much as possible—art-historical context. Additionally, I’m sure I’ll single out a few artists to pay attention to—and why.
My goal here is to deepen others’ understanding of contemporary art. I take this goal very seriously. It was my focus throughout my art-historical training. It’s been central to my work creating educational resources at Artsy and Meta. It’s been the basis of my three books and most of my other 20+ years working in the international art world. I also hope to encourage the production of better art writing and other content overall.
